We walk from the Resort to the old town where we visit many street food establishments specializing in a particular dish.

These include:

Bánh mì is both the word for bread in Vietnamese and the nation’s favorite iconic sandwich baguette, introduced to Vietnam during the French colonial period (1888-1954).  One of the best places to enjoy this food is at Bánh mì Phượng on Phan Chu Trinh Street.

Bánh bèo is a popular central Vietnam dish, especially in Quang Nam and Quang Ngai and one of Hoi An’s special local foods.  These dumplings are made from rice cake, dried shrimps, crispy pork skin, scallion oil, served with a dipping sauce. They are steamed and served in little round bowls.

Bánh canh literally means ‘cake soup’. The soup emanates from the Hue/Da Nang areas. It consists of a type of thick chewy Vietnamese noodle made from rice and tapioca flour.  Bánh canh comes in a number of varieties depending on the accompanying ingredients.

Cao lầu is Hoi An’s iconic noodle dish consisting of special  cao lầu noodles, pork slices and crackling, raw vegetables, scalded soya sprouts and a little strongly flavored broth. It is said that cao lầu cannot be authentically be replicated outside Hoi An precisely because water for soaking the noodles come from Hoi An’s famous Ba Le Well.

Hến trộn is a mixture of small clams, onions, Vietnamese mint, roasted peanuts and fish sauce, which spooned onto pieces of rice crackers.

Chè xí mà is a centuries old favorite Hoi An dessert. This black sesame sweet soup dessert is a blend of black sesame seeds, rice, water and sugar, served hot in small bowls.
